The 42T team carried out an in-depth investigation of the different scrap mechanisms and created some hypotheses for potential root causes, and suggested approaches to mitigation.
This investigation identified a number of areas where equipment configuration had changed from original design intent with no clear basis for such deviation.
A high-speed vision system was developed to allow true scrap levels to be better quantified. This provided the means by which to objectively assess the impact of the mitigation solutions.
Equipment design is now being evolved to incorporate the learnings and design improvements identified during the project.
